Tests

When doing almost anything in game you must roll a test to see if you are successful and how successfully you do it. You make a test by determining the governing characteristic, adding any buffs granted from training/gear/situation, subtracting any debuffs from lack of training/situation, and rolling a d100 in an attempt to get that number or LESS as a result. The number of 10s away from the target number is the degrees of success/failure. Degrees of success/failure show by how much you succeeded/ failed. That is the d100 system in a nutshell.

Skills

Skills represent things you character is trained in. Skill rolls are based on their governing characteristic. You make a skill check by adding any bonuses your training level grants and rolling the d100. If you get less than the target number you are successful.

You can announce the skill you wish to use or you can tell the GM you want to do something and he/she will tell you what skill is needed if any.

Player: I am going to use Search to see if there is a hidden panel on this wall. GM: Ok well it looks like your training level is at a +10. The skill is perception based and your Per is 50. The room is dimly lit so the test is at -10.

Players target number: 50(per)+10(advanced training)-10(poor lighting)=50
Player rolls d100 and gets a 16.

Player: I rolled a 16 so that’s 3 degrees of success. GM: Your suspicions were correct and you quickly find a hidden panel on the wall. You also notice that the panel has recently been opened and there is a smudge by the panel. The extras were uncovered because the player got 3 degrees of success.

ATTEMPTS AND UNTRAINED BASIC SKILLS ARE MADE WITH HALF OF THE GOVERNING CHARACTERISTIC. ATTEMPTS AT UNTRAINED ADVANCED SKILLS ARE IMPOSSIBLE.

Any action not covered by a skill is a Characteristic Test. As its name suggests this test is pure Characteristic +/- buffs/debuffs.
